Tuesday (4/16) sports viewership: NBA Play-in games dominate night

A star-studded NBA Play-in Tournament doubleheader dominated the sports viewership charts for Tuesday, April 16.

Tuesday’s NBA Play-in Tournament doubleheader averaged a combined 3.98 million viewers across TNT and truTV, up 37% from last year. In particular, Warriors-Kings drew 4.05 million (TNT: 3.94M; truTV: 111K) and Lakers-Pelicans 3.91 million (TNT: 3.82M; truTV: 96K) — the second and third-largest audiences in the young history of the Play-in (21 total telecasts).

The Play-in games were easily the two most-watched sporting events of the day, with no other contests cracking even the 400,000 viewer mark. Ranking a distant third, ESPN drew 316,000 for a Maple Leafs-Panthers NHL regular season game — down from the network’s doubleheader of Maple Leafs-Lightning (343K) and Oilers-Avalanche (388K) on the final Tuesday of last season.

Further down the dial, a Braves-Astros Major League Baseball game drew 202,000 on TBS, down from Mets-Dodgers following an NHL playoff game last year (228K). In the same window on ESPN2, a Texas Tech-Arkansas college game drew 142,000 and a Michigan State-Michigan college softball game drew 39,000 on BTN. Shifting to the afternoon hours, a Rangers-Tigers matinee drew 140,000 on MLB Network and an Illinois-Northwestern softball game drew 31,000 on BTN.
