Man arrested for attacking store clerk, robbing business in Mississippi

CARROLL COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Carroll County deputies arrested a man after he allegedly attacked a store clerk and robbed the business.

The incident occurred at the 35/55 Truck Stop on Highway 35 in Vaiden just before 12:15 p.m. on September 15, 2025.

According to Carroll County Sheriff Clint Walker, deputies discovered the store clerk had been beaten. He reported that a man had come in the store and argued with him about the price of gas. The victim said the suspect began to beat him and attempted to gouge out his eyes.

After going to his vehicle, the victim said the suspect returned with a gun and demanded that the clerk give him the money in the register. The sheriff said the clerk complied, and the suspect fled with the money.

The victim was transported to Tyler Holmes Hospital for treatment.

Deputies identified the suspect as 40-year-old Charlie Terrell Jones, of Yazoo City. Walker said Jones has a violent criminal background and was released on parole seven months ago after serving more than 20 years in prison for various crimes, including sexual battery and two counts of kidnapping.

The sheriff said they received assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service, agents with the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) and a Winona police K-9 unit. Before the arrest warrant could be executed, Walker said Jones left the location.

Walker said authorities began pursuing Jones south on Highway 35 toward Kosciusko. A roadblock was set up north of the city. The sheriff said Jones and his driver were forced to stop at the roadblock, and Jones was arrested without incident.

Jones was booked into the Carroll County Regional Correctional Facility on the charge of armed robbery and is awaiting an initial appearance. Additional charges of possession of a weapon by a felon and failure to register as a sex offender are expected to be added on September 16, 2025.
