BOSSIER PARISH, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Students in Bossier Parish are officially back in class today, and the school district is kicking off the new year with some major changes, starting with a historic pay raise for teachers.

Superintendent Jason Rowland said the increase is the most significant permanent pay raise in parish history that didn’t require asking the public for additional funding.
“On August 25th, our teachers are going to see at least $2,500 more, and if you have more years of experience, you’ll get even more than that,” Rowland said. “It’s a much-needed, progressive move. We’re really trying to take the lead and show that this is not just a good place to be, it’s the place to be.”

This year, Apollo Elementary served as the district’s spotlight school for the first day of school. The campus recently completed the first of three phases in a major transformation. Initially built in the late 1960s with an open-concept layout, Apollo is now converting those wide spaces into traditional classrooms to create a more structured learning environment.

Principal Dr. Natalie Pope says it’s about shaping a better environment for students. She’s especially excited to see how the changes will impact 2nd and 3rd graders.

Meanwhile, Bossier Schools is also launching new efforts to boost attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism, a priority across the state. Assistant Superintendent Andrea Spinney says the district plans to be proactive by searching for chronically absent students and reaching out to address barriers such as transportation issues.

On the academic side, Assistant Superintendent Waylon Bates says this is the second year for Louisiana’s new 3rd-grade literacy standards, and Bossier is already working to address those goals before students even reach 3rd grade. A new accountability model for public schools is also rolling out this year.

From classroom updates to academic benchmarks and increased teacher support, Bossier Parish Schools say they’re stepping into the year with momentum.
