Samson has lived with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis since childhood. This rare immune deficiency causes inflammation of the kidney membranes. Her father donated a kidney to her at age 14. A nurse in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, donated a second kidney when she was 20.
Her kidney function has dropped since then. She now needs a third transplant.
The ambulance volunteer grew up in Berkeley Heights and has worked with two rescue squads in the area, including one in River Vale. She has saved many lives through her work in emergency medical services.
“She told me at age three, ‘If you’re crying, Mom, you’re not helping me. Please don’t cry,’” said Juliette Samson, her mom, according to Patch.
The May 28 event will run from noon to 6 p.m. at the River Edge Volunteer Ambulance headquarters at 210 Continental Ave. in River Edge. Blood collected will help adults and children with various medical needs. Donors can also have their cheek swabbed to see if they are a match for Andrea Samson.
Those interested can sign up at www.nybc.org/drive.
Her case has been documented at shareasparekidney.com.
People who want to learn about becoming a donor can email andreasparents@yahoo.com or text 908-419-0509. They can also visit shareasparekidney.com or apply through the hospital at hmh.donorscreen.org/register/now. A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover medical costs.
