Shreveport, LA — Shreveport officials are planning to move forward in 2026 with the implementation of a citywide gunshot detection system, a public safety initiative leaders say is intended to improve emergency response times, strengthen investigations, and enhance safety across multiple neighborhoods.

The technology would introduce real-time acoustic sensors in designated areas identified through crime trend analysis and historical call data. Once operational, the system would detect gunfire, pinpoint its location within seconds, and automatically alert Shreveport

Police Department dispatchers, often before a 911 call is placed.

How The System Is Expected To Work

Gunshot detection systems use a network of outdoor acoustic sensors designed to recognize the distinct sound patterns of gunfire. When a gunshot is detected, the system calculates the location and time of the incident and sends an alert to police dispatch.

Law enforcement officials say this allows officers to respond more quickly to active scenes, locate victims faster, and preserve evidence such as shell casings. In other cities where similar systems have been implemented, police agencies report that some shooting incidents were identified that otherwise may not have been reported by the public.

Public Safety And Accountability Measures

Officials stated the proposed system is intended to support existing patrol strategies and community policing efforts, not replace them. City leaders emphasized that technology alone cannot address violent crime and said the system would be used alongside intervention programs and neighborhood-based policing initiatives.

During public briefings, officials acknowledged community concerns related to transparency and oversight. They said regular performance reports would be released once the system is active, tracking response times, arrest outcomes, and confirmed shooting incidents detected by the technology.

Funding And Next Steps

Funding for the planned 2026 implementation was approved as part of the city’s public safety budgeting process. Officials said the city also expects to pursue state and federal grant funding tied to violence prevention and technology-driven law enforcement initiatives.

Specific installation locations, vendor selection, and deployment timelines have not yet been publicly released. Those details are expected to be finalized during the planning and procurement phase in 2026.

Love Shreveport-Bossier will continue monitoring the planning process and will report updates as details on installation, coverage areas, and system performance become available.
