OpenNebula has announced a partnership with Canonical. The partnership will enable Open Nebula customers to leverage Ubuntu Pro as a built-in, security-maintained Linux operating system for hypervisor nodes.OpenNebula is an open-source virtual infrastructure engine. It enables the dynamic deployment and re-placement of virtualised services within and across sites. It extends the benefits of virtualisation platforms from a single physical resource to a pool of resources, decoupling servers not only from the physical infrastructure but also from the physical location.
Ubuntu Pro is a comprehensive subscription for open-source security and compliance. It extends the life of every Ubuntu LTS from 5 years of standard security maintenance for the Main repository to 10 years for the entire Ubuntu Archive. Existing Ubuntu LTS systems can be upgraded in-place to Ubuntu Pro without redeployment. This will streamline the process across large Ubuntu estates with a single command.
Ubuntu Pro will be available as an option for customers using OpenNebula 7.0 release or later. It will be offered as an option for hypervisor nodes, delivering the same benefits as Ubuntu Pro.
Mark Lewis, VP of Application Services at Canonical, commented, “Ubuntu Pro provides the secure foundation that modern cloud and AI infrastructures demand. By embedding Ubuntu Pro into OpenNebula, we are providing enterprises a robust and compliance-ready environment from the bare metal to the AI workload—making open source innovation ready for enterprise-grade operations.”
Adding to OpenNebula Partnerships
This is the latest partnership announced by OpenNebula. The solution provides a viable alternative to VMWare, offering virtualisation, enterprise cloud, and multi-cluster Kubernetes management. The solution helps organisations to consolidate and modernise their infrastructure. It’s supported by partners such as NetApp, Veeam, NVIDIA, Dell Technologies, and Ampere.
With this new partnership in place, customers can benefit from the additional security features and services that the subscription delivers. The benefits include:
- A trusted open source repository you can build on
- Fast remediation with tested vulnerability fixes
- Auditing, patching automation and management tools to ensure visibility and uptime
- Compliance profiles for the most popular security standards
- Coverage for your OS, infrastructure and application stack, including GCC, PostgreSQL, OpenSSL, Nagios, Rust, PHP, Redis and more.
Canonical reacts quickly to any security issues discovered. It frequently adds CVEs, often daily, to further protect customers and strengthen their security. Customers can be confident that their systems are maintained to the highest security standards.

Constantino Vázquez, VP of Engineering Services at OpenNebula Systems, said: “Our mission is to provide a truly sovereign and secure multi-tenant cloud and edge platform for enterprises and public institutions.
“Partnering with Canonical to integrate Ubuntu Pro into OpenNebula strengthens our customers’ confidence by combining open innovation with long-term stability, security, and compliance.”
Enterprise Times: What does this mean
The partnership will help to strengthen the open-source ecosystem. It allows OpenNebula customers to improve security and make deployment and support easier.
For Canonical, it enhances Ubuntu Pro’s reach and value proposition in the enterprise cloud and AI infrastructure markets. It will do this by expanding its use and integrating it with OpenNebula’s management platform. It also makes it easier for joint customers to take advantage of the commercial version of Ubuntu, increasing revenue for the Linux Vendor.
For OpenNebula, it provides an alternative to the combination of VMware and Red Hat OpenStack. It also offers an option that increases the security stance of its platform for prospects.
