Pennsylvania crew returns from fighting Colorado wildfire

(WHTM) — Pennsylvania’s own returned from fighting fires in the Rocky Mountains.

Firefighters from Penns Woods Type II Initial Attack crew spent 14 days there fighting and containing active wildfires. A rotation from the state has been in Colorado throughout the summer.

“It’s a huge undertaking to do a fire like this,” said Ryan Kuhnes, crew boss of Penns Woods. “The fire we were on, the Derby Fire, was about 5,700 acres, and it’s a huge undertaking. It’s not just putting the fire out, but there’s a lot of work to be done after that happens.”

The fire is still active, the crew said, but more manageable than it was before.

PA’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Forestry oversees the forest firefighting team, which is made up of volunteers. When not working in the state, the department may send firefighters to help contain fires elsewhere while learning new techniques.
