That often means digging through logs to find that key piece of data and then searching for answers. That is changing as organisations face a growing push towards greater observability.

At GrafanaCon in Barcelona, Torkel Odegaard, co-founder of Grafana Labs, talked with Enterprise Times about where the company is and its future. One of the big news items was that Google is adopting Grafana for its systems. As exciting as that is, it raises questions over the licence and whether Google will become a contributor to the project.

Odegaard talked about the challenge of large vendors getting involved and then forking codebases. He pointed out that with AGPL v3, it is harder to do as it places obligations on users.

He also talked about the new features in the product, including its AI agents that actively investigate system failures. The platform has moved beyond simple visualisation. It now acts as an autonomous troubleshooting partner.

The new Assistant allows AI to spawn investigations when alerts fire. These agents do not just report errors. They analyse logs and traces to find root causes before humans step in. This capability evolved from internal hackathons where teams tested autonomous tools.

The rise of AI agents creates a new financial challenge. Data usage can explode as agents query systems continuously. Grafana addresses this with “business observability.” This feature lets teams monitor their own spending patterns. It brings transparency to the cost of autonomous operations.

How will your organisation balance the speed of AI agents with the need for rigorous human oversight in your infrastructure?
