NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — According to U.S. Marshals, an arrest warrant was issued for 37-year-old Shawn Brooks in Florida back in 2013.
But they didn’t get him until Friday, Sept. 5, after tracking him to a home on Third Street in Uptown New Orleans.
“They had bullhorns going at around 6-7 in the morning. It woke us all up,” neighbor Allison Henderson said.
“In 2019, he got arrested for narcotics possession charges related to heroine using a fake name, and through that we were able to develop further information and put him at that address where we found him this morning in the 800 block of Third Street,” U.S. Marshals Deputy Brian Fair said.
When officers attempted to arrest him, Brooks allegedly barricaded himself in the home and then crawled into a neighbor’s attic in an attempt to avoid the arrest.
He was ultimately taken into custody after about a three-hour standoff.
Henderson, who lives nearby, says Brooks was a quiet neighbor who never seemed suspicious.
“No it is a crazy charge and you never expect that on your block,” Henderson said.
Now, she says she’ll pay more attention to her surroundings and the people she talks to.
Brooks is currently booked in Orleans Parish, where he will remain until he is extradited to the locations where he faces charges.
