Daniel Kaluuya to direct and co-write ‘Spider-Punk’ spinoff film

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The Spider-Verse is expanding in new ways after Sony Pictures Animation announced the development of a ‘Spider-Punk’ animated feature.

The spinoff film will be directed and co-written by Daniel Kuluuya, who is expected to reprise his voice role of Hobie Brown, also known as Spider-Punk. This character is the punk-rock version of Spider-Man, using his guitar as a weapon.

The comic book character was introduced on the big screen in ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,’ released in 2023. Spider-Punk is expected to return for the third installment, titled ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ which is slated to hit theaters in 2027. According to Deadline, Kuluuya will develop the film alongside writer Ajon Singh. However, there are currently no updates on casting, plot details, or a release date.

Daniel Kaluuya first gained widespread recognition for his breakout role in Jordan Peele’s 2017 hit film, ‘Get Out.’ His performance earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Although he did not win that year, Kaluuya later won his first Oscar in 2021 for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton in the film ‘Judas and the Black Messiah.’

Despite the British actor starring in several award-winning films, Spider-Man was Kaluuya’s first animated movie. In addition to him, several other well-known actors are set to reprise their roles in “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” including Issa Rae, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, and newcomer Jharrel Jerome.
