People can register online at voter.svrs.nj.gov/register if they possess a valid Driver’s License or non-driver ID card issued by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. A Social Security number works too, provided applicants can sign on-screen or upload a signature image to finish the process.
Paper applications exist online at nj.gov/state/elections/voter-registration. You can also grab one at the Township Clerk’s Office on the first floor of Town Hall at 357 South Livingston Ave. Hours run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
New Jersey requires applicants to be United States citizens. They must be at least 17 years old, though ballots can’t be cast until age 18. County residency of 30 days before the election is mandatory. Those serving jail time for an indictable offense cannot register.
Essex County residents who haven’t picked a political party can do so on Election Day to vote in the June 2 primary.
Three Township Council seats are open in 2026. Each term lasts four years.
Six Democrats filed to run: Stacey Abenstein, Laurie Kahn, Bill Lam, Edward Meinhardt, Ketan Bhuptani, and Daphne Dan Wang. One Republican jumped in: Timothy Foley.
The League of Women Voters of Livingston will hold a candidate forum on Tuesday, May 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Community Center, 204 Hillside Ave. LTV will record it.
Early in-person voting starts May 26 and ends May 31. Mail requests for Vote-By-Mail Ballots must arrive by May 26.
Winners from the June 2 primary will compete against independent or third-party candidates in a general election on Nov. 3. Voters will also choose representatives for several county and federal positions, including U.S. senator, a U.S. House of Representatives seat in the 11th district, Essex County executive, and the Essex County Board of Commissioners.
