More than 97,000 students took at least one AP exam this year, and they’re gearing up for the 2026 testing season starting May 4. WalletHub singled out one stat that helped boost the state’s position: it has the second-highest share of test-takers who scored at least a 3 on AP exams.
College Board numbers tell an impressive story. Among grades 11 and 12 students who sat for AP exams in 2024-25, a whopping 77.7% scored 3 or higher, putting the state near the top nationwide.
The College Board ranked the state third for the percentage of 2025 public high school graduates who earned a 3 or higher on an AP exam during high school. The data? 33.2% of graduates hit that mark. Massachusetts took first at 35.8%, with New York close behind at 34.4%.
New Jersey School System Soars
“New Jersey has a dedicated digital learning plan that supports technology integration in education,” read a portion of WalletHub’s findings, according to app.com. “It also has the seventh highest pupil-to-teacher ratio in the nation, highlighting the importance of accessible digital resources for students.
Test scores went far past AP exams when determining these rankings. The state grabbed second place for reading test scores and fifth for math scores among both fourth and eighth graders, per WalletHub’s data.
Pennsylvania students in grades 11 and 12 during 2024-25 scored 3 or higher on 77.9% of AP exams — slightly edging out the Garden State. New York hit 73.6% at that threshold. Delaware came in at 67.6%.
California, Illinois, the District of Columbia, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, and Colorado filled out the top 10 states for the percentage of 2025 graduates who scored 3 or higher on at least one AP exam. California posted 31.8%. Colorado brought up the rear at 29.5%.
