CarbonBlack Technology and a group of broadcast technology partners will debut what they describe as the first multi-camera, real-time projection-based virtual production workflow for broadcast at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 17-22, in Booth CL3.

The integrated demonstration combines CarbonBlack’s screen technology with Christie Virtual Projection using Sapphire 4K40-RGBH projectors, Vizrt’s Viz Engine 5 real-time rendering, Disguise, and WePlay Studios’ virtual production stack, alongside components from RED Digital, Zeiss, Evertz and StYpe. Marziani Labs will showcase new planar speakers that the company says use AI for precise audio dispersion.

CarbonBlack said the workflow enables multi-camera shooting on a projection-based stage to broadcast standards — a capability previously limited by ambient light and other constraints — offering an alternative to LED volumes and green screen setups. The company said its nanotechnology-based Hybrid RP surface absorbs ambient light while delivering deep blacks, BT.2020 color, controlled light behavior and pixel-free imagery without moiré, helping live subjects integrate more convincingly on camera.

Christie’s system enables frame mixing for multi-camera rendering, while Viz Engine 5 acts as a real-time compositor that can combine photorealistic Unreal Engine environments with data-driven Viz graphics in a unified, low-latency workflow across broadcast, corporate, social and immersive platforms.

WePlay Studios designed the real-time ICVFX system architecture and overall integration, supporting a theoretically unlimited number of independently tracked camera perspectives. The build includes render nodes based on HP Z workstations with NVIDIA GPUs and AJA and Matrox I/O, and a custom Vizrt-based pipeline tailored for projection-driven workflows.

Backers say the approach can reduce costs and environmental impact compared to LED volumes and cut post-production time versus green screen by letting talent perform against visible environments.
