Minnesota DNR sets 4-walleye limit on Upper Red Lake for 2025-26 winter season

Anglers on Upper Red Lake will be able to take home four walleye this winter, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced on Monday. Only one keeper is allowed to be more than 17 inches long.

The four-fish limit is on par with last year’s winter regulations but down from the five-fish cap set during the 2025 open water season.

“Our fall assessment indicated that the walleye population continues to be in excellent shape. We are dropping the bag limit to four because the winter fishery is so popular,” said Brad Parsons, Minnesota DNR fisheries section manager.

Parsons added that the DNR is anticipating “exceptional fishing over the next few years” thanks to a higher number of spawning female walleye this year and “strong numbers” of fish maturing to a harvestable size.

The winter fishing season runs from Nov. 15 through Feb. 22.

More information on walleye regulations is available on the DNR’s website.
