State money coming to help once-troubled Fresno mobile home park

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – More money is coming to the city of Fresno to help fight homelessness.

This time, the state is giving $4.9 million to help revitalize what was once a troubled mobile home park.

In 2021, a deadly fire killed a man at the Trails End Mobile Home Park on Blackstone and Sierra Avenues. Since then, the property has gone through a lot of changes. The city took over enforcement, there’s now a new owner, a new name, and now new units are coming.

“This started out as a tragedy, a person who lost their life in a fire,” Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer said.

The deadly fire exposed extreme mismanagement at the Trails End Mobile Home Park in north Fresno. Now the property, known today as La Hacienda Mobile Estates, is getting a big boost from the state.

The state’s Homekey+ program has given the City of Fresno money to help revitalize the property. That money is going to one particular group, Dyer says, should never be forgotten.

“Our veterans, people who have served this country. And when they come back home, sometimes they have substance abuse issues or mental health issues. Those are going to be addressed as well through permanent supportive housing on the site,” he said.

With the money the city says, together with the property’s owner, Self Help Enterprises, they will build 18 new homes. They said 12 units will have one bedroom and six will have two bedrooms.

Dyer said these homes will be affordable, and some of the money that’s been awarded will also go to preserve the units that people already live in. He said their homes will stay at an affordable price, too.

Dyer said the city doesn’t have too many homeless veterans, but they need to help each and every one.

“We know that housing is not enough, but it is a good start. What also is needed is for that intense counseling for some of the folks that have experienced some trauma in their life,” he added.
