Hayward police exchange gunfire with suspect Wednesday
(KRON) — A Hayward man who allegedly shot at police officers Wednesday afternoon was arrested on three counts of attempted murder, the Hayward Police Department said.

Police responded at 4:12 p.m. to the 29000 block of Mission Boulevard on the report of a man armed with a handgun. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Jaime Mejia Lopez, allegedly crouched behind a parked car and began shooting at arriving officers, according to authorities. After an exchange of gunfire between officers and Lopez, police said they were able to detain Lopez.

No one was struck by gunfire in the shootout, Hayward PD said. Lopez was medically cleared at a hospital for a minor thumb injury.

Lopez was arrested and booked into jail for three counts of attempted murder and the unlawful possession of a firearm.

The Hayward Police Internal Affairs Unit and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the involved officers’ actions in the police shooting.
