MCPD: Man charged with kidnapping in fatal Bethesda shooting

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Police have charged one person with kidnapping and are looking for two more suspects after a Bethesda man was shot and killed on Sunday.

The Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) said that first responders and officers responded to the 5900 block of Montrose Rd. around 7:40 a.m. on Sept. 21 for a working code.

Officers went into an apartment and found 29-year-old Akwalabeng Fontava with a gunshot wound. He died there.

During the following investigation, MCPD said that “detectives learned that an adult man and woman who were also inside the apartment were allegedly kidnapped and forced into a vehicle following the shooting.” The kidnappers allegedly released the man in Silver Spring.

MCPD found the car at Westfield Montgomery Mall and found the woman with 37-year-old Sheldon Milan Boykins of Hyattsville.

Officers took Boykins into custody and charged him with two counts of kidnapping and firearms-related offenses.

MCPD said that its detectives believe two additional men were involved in the incident and are continuing their search.
