Prince George’s County improves security after fights at Wise High School rival game

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (DC News Now) — Prince George’s County Public Schools is implementing new security measures after several fights and a robbery broke out during Friday night’s Wise High School versus Flowers High School football game.

The district announced Monday that all Wise High football games will now be played on Saturdays. In addition, security will be increased at larger athletic venues, with additional staff and local police on site.

Robert Adams, the father of a Wise High School student, said he was surprised by what happened during the rivalry game.

“They’re aware of the Flowers situation. Whenever Wise and Flowers get together, they’re supposed to be prepared for it,” Adams said. “I was wondering what happened to the preparation. I guess it wasn’t enough. I was a little confused because they’re usually prepared for this.”

While some parents believe the new security changes won’t make a big difference, Adams feels safety requires more than just district action.

“The only suggestion I have is I think the community needs to get more involved,” he said. “Get more parents to come to the games with their kids. If it’s more of a community atmosphere, with peer leaders or more adults around, we can control some of these situations.”

The fights at Wise were not the only incidents at local football games on Friday. In Montgomery County, police dispersed a crowd at Blake High School after a fight broke out.

Prince George’s County isn’t the only school system to make changes to its high school football game policies. In D.C., students must now be accompanied by an adult to attend high school football games.

Adams believes schools can only do so much.

“I think sometimes we spend too much time depending on [the] government to do the job parents or the community should do,” he said.

The new measures in Prince George’s County take effect immediately.
