Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders spoke to his reputation for toughness.
“I don’t know if Gary earned his toughness playing Razorback football, raising dairy cows in Branch, or participating in the contact sport that is Arkansas politics, but everyone knew him as a tough leader who would work hard to serve the River Valley – and still end the day with a smile on his face,” the governor said. “His passing leaves a hole in the Senate that will be hard to fill, and my prayers right now are with Kathi, the Stubblefields’ two children, and all who knew and loved this hardworking public servant.”
Attorney General Tim Griffin spoke of the senator’s legacy of service.
Senator Stubblefield was a strong advocate for his constituents with deeply held conservative values and a fierce love for his family,” the attorney general said. “He was proud to have walked on and played for @RazorbackFB under legendary Coach Frank Broyles, and he served Arkansans as a State Senator, State Representative, Justice of the Peace, School Board Member, and Farm Service Commissioner.”
Rep. Steve Womack (R-3) extended condolences. His district overlaid portions of the late senator’s district.
“His service and dedication to the people of Arkansas will be remembered; and my thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who mourn his loss,” Womack wrote.
Arkansas Sen. Missy Irvin (R-24) was one of the first to post after learning of Stubblefield’s passing.
“Senator Gary Stubblefield was a great man, a wise friend,” Irvin posted. “He deeply loved God, his family, friends, Arkansas & this country.”
Arkansas Senator and 95th General Assembly President Pro Tempore Bart Hester (R-33) spoke about Stubblefield’s faith and how it informed his legislative agenda.
“He was a man of deep faith in his Lord and savior Jesus Christ,” Hester said. “He was a man of integrity and was committed to the protecting rights of the unborn and the protection of the Second Amendment.”
Arkansas Representative and House Speaker for the 95th General Assembly, Brian S. Evans R-68), spoke of the late senator’s commitment to serving the public.
“His time in the House and later in the Senate was marked by dedication to the people he represented,” Evans posted. “On behalf of the House, I extend our condolences to his family.”
Arkansas Republican Party Chairman Joseph K. Wood spoke about Stubblefield’s commitment.
“Senator Stubblefield was a devoted public servant who cared immensely about his state,” Wood said. “I was honored to call him a longtime friend and could always count on his support – whether it was attending events, working through policy ideas, or sharing laughs about our families.”
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) spoke of Stubblefield being one of “the best.”
“Senator Gary Stubblefield represented the best of Arkansas. A public servant who worked tirelessly to make our state better, Gary never forgot his small-town roots in the River Valley and always put the interests of his community first. Gary tirelessly fought for the unborn and the most vulnerable Arkansans, and he was a great Senator who will be deeply missed.
