The National Safety Council (NSC) estimates that there will be almost 425 traffic-related deaths and 48,000 injuries throughout the nation during Labor Day weekend, from Friday, August 29, to Monday, September 1. Additionally, travelers will likely experience increased traffic during the weekend.
“Labor Day weekend travel requires extra caution,” said Mark Chung, Executive Vice President of Safety Leadership and Advocacy at NSC. “This remains one of the most dangerous times for roadway users, and everyone plays a role in preventing tragedies. Drivers must take the necessary steps to travel safely.”
The Red Cross of Utah also provided several tips for drivers to help ensure their safety during Labor Day Weekend. They encourage drivers to check their car’s tire conditions, fill up oil and other fluids before travelling, and stay alert while driving.
Additionally, drivers should always avoid driving while impaired. 36% of traffic fatalities during the Labor Day Weekend involve alcohol-impaired drivers, according to the NSC.
Drivers should also keep an emergency kit inside their vehicle.
“Before heading out this holiday, make sure your vehicle is in good working condition, your gas tank is full and you have an emergency kit ready,” Michael Smauldon, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Utah Chapter, said.
A good emergency kit, according to the Red Cross of Utah, includes:
- High-protein snacks
- Water
- First aid supplies
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Small battery-operated radio
- Blanket
- Basic tools and a tire repair kit
- Jumper cables
- Map
- Cellphone charger
- Emergency contact card with names and phone numbers
Smauldon says, “Buckle up, drive responsibly and plan ahead to ensure a safe and enjoyable weekend for everyone.”
