Bethesda doctor sentenced to prison for distributing controlled substances

MARYLAND (DC News Now) — A Bethesda doctor was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison after she was found guilty of distributing controlled substances.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the District of Maryland said in a news release that 48-year-old Anissa Maroof of Potomac, Md. gave patients from West Virginia prescriptions for controlled substances, sometimes prescribing dangerous combinations and not informing patients of the risks.

The USAO said that Maroof also continued to prescribe these substances to patients who had indicated that they were selling their excess through illicit channels.

Prosecutors said that Maroof would call these prescriptions in to local pharmacies without meeting with the patient first. She would then instruct the patients to leave cash under her office door.

She would also advise her patients on how to use different pharmacies to split up filling their prescriptions.

The USAO said that Maroof would prescribe substances including Alprazolam, Amphetamine-dextroamphetamine and Buprenorphine.

Maroof pleaded guilty to distributing and dispensing controlled substances in May. At that time, she faced a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

After her prison sentence, Maroof will have to serve an additional two years of supervised release.
