Summer camp teaching kids how to make a music video

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — While some kids spend their summer playing outside or doing arts and crafts, a group of students in New Orleans are doing something unique. They are learning how to make a music video.

In partnership with the Trombone Shorty Foundation at Studio La La La, 15 teens are part of New Orleans Video Access Center’s (NOVAC) summer camp program.

In the program the students are making a music video for the New Groove Brass Band for their song, “On My Grind.”

“We are teaching students the basics of production. They learn how to visualize the concept for a music video. They listen to the song, and then they thought of some ideas and created a story board with a whole production plan,” said India King Robbins, Executive Director of New Orleans Video Access Center.

“I feel like they really do a good job of harnessing everyone’s creativity, allowing people to share ideas,” said Marshall Russelo, a 14-year-old NOVAC student.

“Definitely something to put on my college portfolio, because I’m trying to do this in my adult life and this is just a great opportunity,” 16-year-old NOVAC student Evan Moller said.

“The kids are confident, and they are having fun, and they are learning,” India King Robbins said.

The finished music video will premiere at a special screening in August.
