City officials first discovered the issue on Friday, April 18. In response, affected systems were immediately disconnected to secure the network. An investigation is now underway with the help of top cybersecurity experts, and the appropriate authorities have been notified.
The City’s IT Department is working around the clock to restore services and reduce downtime. Officials have not yet disclosed which systems were affected, but they confirm that emergency services remain fully operational and no unusual financial activity has been detected. Water utility customers can still pay their bills, though some services may be slower than usual as systems come back online.
“We are in the early stages of our investigation,” city officials shared. “Anyone who has experienced a cyber incident knows it is a time-intensive process. Every week, we will learn more about the scope of the incident and will communicate additional details as our investigation progresses. We take the security of our systems very seriously and appreciate your patience and understanding as we work diligently to restore our systems and resources.”
To ease concerns, the city has announced that services will not be disconnected due to past-due balances during this time. Payments can be made in person with cash or check, or through the City of Abilene’s website.
