Spring skiing still thriving at Snowbird as Utah ski season winds down

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — As ski season begins to wind down in Utah, five resorts have already wrapped up their seasons, with more expected to close this weekend. However, spring skiing remains in full swing at Snowbird, where skiers continue to take advantage of snowy conditions during the season’s final stretch.

Snowbird has had an outstanding ski season, receiving over 500 inches of snowfall so far. While some Utah resorts are preparing to close their doors for the season in the next few weeks, Snowbird plans to stay open well into May.

With a base depth of 117 inches, the resort anticipates being open for weekend skiing through Memorial Day, conditions permitting.

Though the temperatures are warmer than usual, visitors told ABC4 that the snow was “holding up really well.”

“I love the spring skiing here generally. Pretty good conditions, and it’s a little warm today, but it’s holding up really well, and I’m having a lot of fun,” said Kirby St. John, visiting from Santa Cruz, California.

St. John said that his family has been skiing at Snowbird for years, always in the same week, and they’ve never been disappointed by the conditions.

“We always have good conditions and have a lot of fun,” he said. “Some seasons are better than others, but I’m always really happy with it.”

Jeff Kowalewski, a skier from Michigan, described the weather conditions as “still kind of wintery up top.”

“The slopes are fast, and the shaded areas in the morning can be a little crusty, but when I moved to the other side, it warmed up fast and felt great,” Kowalewski said.

Christina Fischer, a local skier, said while the bottom can be a bit slushy, the upper part of the mountain “is absolutely gorgeous.”

“It’s beautiful. What more could you ask for?” she said. “No crowds, I mean, you can’t beat it.”

Kris Kletke from Michigan said she loves the atmosphere and the mountains, adding that “there’s nothing better than being out west and soaking it all in.”

One local family was determined to make the most of the remaining ski season. John Lee said he was aiming to get 19 more ski days in before the season wraps up.

“I just enjoy the last days. I’m trying to get to 100 days this year, so I think I can do it,” he said, adding that last week’s fresh snow and this week’s warmer conditions made for a great variety of skiing experiences.

As the season winds down, several other resorts in Utah will soon close for the year. Snowbasin will be wrapping up its season this weekend, while Alta, Deer Valley, Park City Mountain, and Powder Mountain are all scheduled to close next weekend.
