“It’ll be three years, Aug. 27. Long as I don’t have justice, no, I’m not going to be alright,” said Sharon August.
Pain, heartbreak and desperation are what August feels daily as she looks for answers to her son’s murder.
“I just ask God, give me the strength. I asked God to let me know who did. I need justice,” said August.
According to police, on Aug. 22, 2022, they responded to a shooting on General Taylor Street around noon that claimed the life of 31-year-old Kevin August.
Today, the only way she sees her son is by looking at photos. Since her son’s murder, she has called the detectives daily. She wants more to be done in the case.
“It doesn’t take two years. Every time I call the detective the voicemail is full. I can’t leave a message, and I never get a phone call back. It’s like they kicked me to the curb,” said August.
“Every day, every week, every month that goes by, the trail gets colder and colder and people’s memories, ” said Rafael Goyeneche with the Metropolitan Crime Commission.
Goyneche explains during 2022, violent crime was escalating, and the number of officers was decreasing.
He adds as cases get older, it takes something extraordinary for the police to be able to crack the case, but that doesn’t mean that they’re not trying.
“It can’t just be a CrimeStoppers tip saying that so-and-so committed the murder that may give the police, a lead. It has to rise to the level of probable cause to arrest, arrest, and prove beyond a reasonable doubt to convict,” said Goyneche.
August says she will continue to pray hoping the next time she gets a call from the police will be about the person who killed her son.
“Somebody needs to say something. Somebody saw something. A mama shouldn’t have to bury her child, it should be the other. Kevin should have buried me, I’m the mama. I never thought I’d bury my child,” said August.
