Orleans Justice Center undergoing security audit

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — An operational and security audit is underway at the Orleans Justice Center, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.

OPSO officials said the audit, which is reportedly designed to strengthen jail safety, compliance and effectiveness, began on Aug. 3, with the arrival of officials with the National Institute of Corrections.

They said it will allow the OPSO to review and improve key aspects of the facility’s operations.

“We are excited and grateful to host the National Institute of Corrections,” said Sheriff Susan Hutson. “Their presence affirms our office’s commitment to accountability and transparency, and it reflects our ongoing work to bring national best practices to New Orleans. We welcome their guidance as we continue to strengthen every aspect of our operations.”

The NIC team arrived on Sunday, Aug. 3, and began a walkthrough of the facility. The audit will focus on several areas, including:

• Control centers and communications
• Inmate counts and controlled movement
• Key control and perimeter security
• Physical plant security
• Segregation and use of force policies
• Emergency preparedness
• Security inspections
• Staffing and post coverage plans

The audit will end on Aug. 8.
