The S.S. United States has been sitting in the south Philly port since the 1990s. It was about to be scrapped when Okaloosa county commissioners voted last year to pay $10 million for the ship.
The county plans to sink the vessel about 20 miles south of Destin, creating the world’s largest artificial reef.
But it must first go to Mobile to be stripped and cleaned of hazardous chemicals or materials. Friday afternoon crews moved the ship just a few hundred feet from Pier 82 to Pier 80 without a hitch.
