SS United States enters Mobile Bay

UPDATE 6:15 AM: The ship was within visual range of Dauphin Island at about 6 am.

ORIGINAL STORY: DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (WKRG) — Behind historic Fort Gaines is the easternmost point on Dauphin Island. Before dawn a small cluster of people have begun parking at a tiny gravel lot, waiting to get a glimpse of the SS United States.

The former ocean liner is expected to enter the mouth of Mobile Bay at dawn this morning before it makes its journey to Mobile from Philadelphia.

A news release from Okaloosa County said they expected the ship to enter Mobile Bay at 6 am. That could change somewhat based on weather and surf conditions.

Today, the ship’s destination will be Modern American Recycling Services. It will be stripped of hazardous materials before it’s sent to the Florida Coast to be sunk as a fishing and diving reef.
