Report finds deficiencies at Reedtown Water Association

HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) hit Reedtown Water Association with a low score when it comes to water quality. The system received a two out of five overall capacity rating.

The water association received the report last Friday. They now have 30 days to respond with a plan to address each deficiency or dispute any findings. Reedtown also has 120 days to correct the deficiencies or request an extension.

MSDH found significant deficiencies in pump controls, pump management, water system management and several other areas of the water system. According to the report, 2018 was the last time any work was done on the storage tanks.

“Look at these old tanks that’s been in, been here for a long time. And these tanks cause problems with our water because we need new tanks,” said Velma Frazier, a Reedtown Water Association customer.

Hinds County Supervisor Tony Smith, District 2, suggested having an elevated tank.

“That elevated tank would give gravity fed water. So, make it much easier, so they wouldn’t have to use all type of booster pumps,” he said.

The report also stated that Mr. Mathes reported pressure as low as 18 PSI in some areas. It also said the water did not have enough momentum to go up a hill and reach customers in another area. A pressure of at least 20 PSI must be maintained in distribution.
