BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — May 20, 2026
Bloomington police investigated a series of burglaries, assaults, thefts, extortion reports, drug cases and warrant arrests between May 12 and May 19, 2026, according to Bloomington Police Department daily summaries.
Several reports involved burglaries or thefts from homes, businesses and vehicles. On May 16, police arrested a 19-year-old after residents in the 300 block of East Sixth Street reported seeing a person leaving their residence. Police said items including bottles of cologne and a laptop were found in the suspect’s backpack and returned to the owners. Police also connected the suspect to another burglary in the same area, where a gaming console was reported stolen and later returned.
Additional burglaries were reported in the 300 block of East Sixth Street, where a gaming console and cologne were stolen, and in the 400 block of North Grant Street, where a resident reported that someone entered an unlocked residence and stole a computer and PlayStation.
Businesses also reported thefts and burglaries. Lost Empire Antiques, 715 W. 17th St., reported May 15 that several items, including firearms, were stolen from the business. Rural King, 3201 W. State Road 45, reported a shoplifting incident the same day, and three people were arrested on organized retail theft allegations. Police also responded to shoplifting reports at Target, CVS, Sunoco and other businesses during the week.
The summaries also included multiple thefts from vehicles. Victims reported wallets, tools, batteries, a laptop, clothing and other property stolen from vehicles on South Covey Lane, North Headley Road, South Walnut Street, South Monon Drive, East Grimes Lane and other locations. In some cases, police said the vehicles had been left unlocked.
Police also investigated several assaults. On May 18, a woman reported that a known man pointed a gun at her during an argument in the 1500 block of West Seventh Street. No injury was reported. Earlier that day, a man reported that two unknown males slapped him in the left eye and struck him in the lower torso in the 300 block of South Grant Street. Police later located cameras that may have captured the incident.
On May 19, officers responded to East Third Street and South Clarizz Boulevard for a fight in progress. Police said a man reported that an unknown subject stopped near him, called him names, swung a knife at him, slammed him to the ground, punched him and threatened to kill him. The victim reported abrasions to his elbows and hand, and damage to his shirt and umbrella. A 34-year-old was arrested on allegations of attempted battery with a deadly weapon, intimidation with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct.
Police also responded to a battery report at Centerstone East 2, 653 S. Rogers St., on May 19. A woman reported that a known man yelled at her, causing saliva to hit her mouth, threw the contents of a drink on her and struck her in the cheek, causing pain and swelling. A 40-year-old was arrested on a battery allegation and booked into the Monroe County Jail.
Several reports involved threats, intimidation or extortion. On May 14, a female reported that a male altered photos of her children and attempted to extort them. On May 16, a man reported that an unknown person threatened to distribute pictures of him if he did not pay money. On May 18, another man reported receiving threatening messages demanding money. Police also investigated social media threats and verbal threats during the week.
Police made several drug-related arrests and citations during the reporting period. On May 17, a 34-year-old was arrested on allegations of possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia after officers responded to a welfare check at Dollar General South Walnut Square, 2430 S. Walnut St. A 47-year-old was also charged with possession of methamphetamine, according to the police summary. That same evening, officers made multiple drug-related arrests and citations after traffic stops near East North Drive and South Henderson Street.
Other arrests involved warrant allegations, invasion of privacy, operating while intoxicated, resisting law enforcement, domestic battery, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.
Police also responded to several crashes, including property-damage accidents, hit-and-run crashes and personal-injury crashes. On May 15, officers arrested a 19-year-old after police said a vehicle struck a building in the 100 block of East Third Street and the driver fled. The person was arrested on allegations including resisting law enforcement, leaving the scene of an accident, minor consumption of alcohol, operating while intoxicated and operating while intoxicated endangerment.
The summaries also included welfare checks and mental health-related calls. In several cases, people were transported to the hospital for evaluation and assistance. On May 18, officers responded to the 500 block of West Howe Street for a possible death and found a 74-year-old man deceased.
