Brandon Sanderson is one of the most prolific sci-fi fantasy authors out there right now, and Hollywood seems to be going all in. It was announced earlier this year that Apple TV would be adapting Sanderson’s Cosmere universe into movies and TV shows, and now his popular YA series is getting an adaptation as well.

First reported by Deadline, Sanderson’s Skyward book series is officially getting a TV series adaptation. The show will reportedly be adapted by Tomorrow Studios, which is the indie studio behind Netflix’s live-action One Piece. Here’s what Sanderson had to say about the partnership in an interview with Deadline:

“I’ve been working on the Skyward series for nearly a decade, and to have a partner like Tomorrow Studios to help bring this story to television is a dream come true.”

As someone who has read Skyward, and the rest of the Cytoverse series, I’m personally very excited for this adaptation. And while the TV series officially has a producer, it hasn’t yet been announced which streaming service will actually host the episodes. Apple TV may seem like the obvious choice, considering they are already working on Cosmere adaptations with Sanderson, but personally I’d love to see this adaptation come to Netflix.

Apple TV has a reputation for fantastic original shows, especially when it comes to sci-fi. But it doesn’t have the same reputation for young adult-targeted content as Netflix. Shows like Stranger Things, Outer Banks, and Ginny & Georgia are just a few examples of how the streaming service has succeeded at showcasing “coming of age” stories quite well. Skyward is a story about a teenage girl trying to find her identity in an impossible world, and that really just seems to fit Netflix’s brand more than any other streaming service.

For those not familiar with Sanderson’s Skyward, I’ll give you a quick rundown. The story follows a young woman named Spensa Nightshade, the daughter of a disgraced fighter pilot who dreams of following in her father’s footsteps and fighting the alien force surrounding her home planet. It’s a story about self-discovery through hardship and the unraveling of humanity’s greatest mysteries. There’s action, romance, and classic sci-fi elements all wrapped up into one story.

The other thing to consider here is the Tomorrow Studios of it all. During the interview with Deadline, Tomorrow Studios heads said: “Brandon has created a thrilling universe where courage, curiosity and determination to challenge what we think can change the fate of entire worlds.”

That sounds a lot like the kind of thing One Piece is all about, and the success the studio has found with that story is a testament to their ability to produce something audiences will connect with. Similar to One Piece, however, the success of this series will depend on just how involved the creator is with its direction. Sanderson has already delayed writing more books due to his involvement with Hollywood, and he only has so much time he can dedicate to each of these upcoming projects. While he said he would write the script for the pilot of the Skyward adaptation, we don’t yet know how involved he plans to be beyond that.

As of right now, the plan is for Tomorrow Studios to focus on adapting the first book for television. There are four total novels in the Cytonic series, so there’s a lot more story to uncover if the show ends up being successful.
