The winner, whose name hasn’t been released, stops at the gas station regularly to buy tickets. After seeing news reports about the expiring prize, he asked employees if they knew who might have won.
“While they didn’t know for sure who the winner was, they knew that only a few of their regular players opted for Pick-6 as their game of choice and told him to double-check everything,” the NJ Lottery said, according to North Jersey.
He went home. Began searching his house. He checked every room and corner before moving to his closet.
He started rifling through pants pockets and “he finally found a crumpled Pick-6 ticket from last May,” the lottery agency said. After confirming the numbers matched, he raced straight to lottery headquarters.
Officials verified the ticket was authentic when he arrived on May 14. The deadline for claiming the prize was May 22.
The New Jersey Lottery urges players to check their tickets often. Many smaller winning tickets get forgotten in drawers, wallets, and clothing for months or years, officials said.
Players can scan tickets at retailers, through the state lottery app, or punch in numbers online using the ticket checker system. Pick-6 isn’t one of the more popular games at the Roseland location, which helped narrow down potential winners.
The gas station where he bought the ticket had only a few customers who played Pick-6 on a regular basis. This made it easier for employees to suggest the man search his belongings again.
