ATSC, Brazil’s SBTVD Forum & South Korea’s TTA Sign Strategic Memorandum

Three leading standards organizations in the Americas and Asia signed a memorandum of understanding to formalize cooperation on developing and promoting next-generation terrestrial broadcasting standards.

The agreement brings together ATSC, Brazil’s Sistema Brasileiro de TV Digital Terrestre (SBTVD) Forum and South Korea’s Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) to enhance global interoperability for advanced broadcasting services and accelerate collaboration on ATSC 3.0 and related technologies. The MOU was signed May 12 in Seoul.

Under the pact, the organizations will collaborate on standards and recommended practices, support testing and certification, exchange technical and strategic information and coordinate industry engagement across key markets. They will also hold regular coordination meetings aligned with events including NAB Show in Las Vegas, KOBA Show in Seoul and SET Expo in Sao Paulo.

“This agreement represents an important milestone for the global broadcasting industry,” said Madeleine Noland, ATSC president. “By aligning efforts across North America, South America and Asia, we are creating a stronger foundation for interoperable next-generation broadcasting technologies that will benefit broadcasters, manufacturers, developers and viewers worldwide.”

“This MOU reinforces the importance of international cooperation in shaping the future of broadcasting,” said Raymundo Barros, president of the SBTVD Forum. “A harmonized standards ecosystem enables greater innovation and creates new opportunities for broadcasters and technology providers globally.”

“TTA is pleased to collaborate with ATSC and the SBTVD Forum to support the evolution of next-generation broadcasting technologies,” said Seunghyun Son, TTA president. “Closer cooperation between standards organizations is essential to ensuring global compatibility and sustainable industry growth.”

The MOU outlines collaboration on worldwide interoperability for terrestrial broadcasting services and products; coordination on testing and certification; cross-referencing and harmonization of technical standards; joint communications; appointment of liaison officers; and the potential to expand participation to additional standards bodies adopting ATSC 3.0 or related technologies.

The pact aims to reduce market fragmentation, enable economies of scale for device manufacturers and speed innovation in areas including immersive media, advanced emergency information, targeted services, datacasting and mobile reception. It emphasizes flexible collaboration while respecting each organization’s intellectual property policies, governance models and legal frameworks.

The MOU takes effect immediately.
