By rssfeeds-admin The opposing team’s goalie dropped to the ice around 9 p.m. Dizziness hit him first. Then came waves of nausea. He could still talk and move when others rushed over, but his condition deteriorated fast. Within minutes, he wasn’t breathing and showed no pulse.
Stefano yelled at his wife to call 911. He dropped to his knees and started chest compressions. Someone sprinted to grab the AED off the wall, and the officer sent two shocks through the victim’s chest.
“Gave him another shock and resumed chest compressions, and he shortly came back to us again. He started blinking his eyes and I started asking him, ‘What’s your name, what’s your name?’ He was able to with some trouble, he was able to tell me what his name was,” Stefano said, according to ABC7NY.
Stefano has worked the force for almost ten years. CPR and AED training happen regularly. He’d responded to emergencies while on duty several times, but never off the clock until that Wednesday night.
“A person will turn white, almost grey, you know, their skin tone is completely flushed. He was unresponsive, not breathing. He didn’t have a pulse, and then I quickly started CPR test compressions at that time,” Stefano said.
Advanced Life Support and Basic Life Support units got there minutes later and rushed the man to Hackensack University Medical Center, according to Oradell PBA. The goalie made it. He’s recovering in the hospital now and is grateful the officer was there to save him.
Frank Stefano plays in a hockey league at the Ice House where this happened. Seconds count when someone’s dying, he said.
