Maplewood Unveils Streets Plan for Prospect Street: Virtual Meetings Scheduled

Maplewood Township will conduct two virtual sessions on April 28 and May 4. Residents can review concept blueprints for Prospect Street, slated for milling and paving this year. Officials plan to add bike lanes, traffic-calming measures, and pedestrian upgrades along the route from Concord Avenue to Beach Street.

The concept adopts the Complete Streets model for roadway planning, which tries to serve all transportation methods: walking, cycling, and driving. Safer, more accessible roads for everyone — that’s the aim.

According to The Village Green, the first session happens April 28 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. It covers the section from Concord Avenue to Tuscan Road. The second gathering is May 4 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., focusing on the segment from Tuscan Road to Beach Street.

Both sessions will run via Zoom. Township staff will share the concept blueprints, then field questions and remarks from attendees.

Last year, the township conducted multiple sessions before repaving Parker Avenue and installing bike lanes. Officials have worked to address pedestrian concerns on Prospect Avenue, particularly after two middle school students were struck by a vehicle while crossing in 2024.

Bollards went in at the Elmwood and Oakland intersections in 2025. The installations came nine days after the students were hit.

Prospect Street runs north-south through the township. It links Concord Avenue at the Union Township border to Beach Street at the South Orange Village border. The repaving effort marks a significant infrastructure outlay for the area.

Residents can examine the concept blueprints online before the sessions. Township officials want community members at either or both gatherings to absorb the proposed modifications and offer input.
