Newark Event Will Provide Expungement Services, Job Resources on April 28

A free clinic will help people erase marijuana charges and minor criminal offenses from their records. The event happens Tuesday, April 28, at Down Bottom Farms in Newark. It runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at 371-395 Ferry St. Adults over 21 can attend.

Blaze Responsibly will run the clinic. They’ll offer legal services for those seeking record expungement. The Ironbound Community Corporation will host it, while Green Thumb Industries’ RISE Dispensaries of NJ is putting up the money.

What does expungement do? Court-ordered expungements can wipe out an arrest, all court proceedings tied to a case, a criminal or juvenile conviction, and the outcome — including the sentence — from someone’s record, according to state authorities.

“In most cases, you must wait five years after your sentence is served,” the New Jersey Courts advises, according to Patch. “All fines and fees must be paid. Sometimes, you can file for expungement after four years. You can expunge no more than one indictable conviction and up to three disorderly persons offenses or petty disorderly persons offenses.”

Attendees can expunge no more than one indictable conviction and up to three disorderly persons offenses or petty disorderly persons offenses. Some criminal convictions can’t be expunged in New Jersey, including murder, sexual offenses, robbery, arson, terrorism, and other serious crimes, Legal Services of New Jersey notes.

The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission Office of Diversity & Inclusion will have materials onsite. They’ll provide education about cannabis equity programs and guidance on applying for a cannabis business license. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission will also be there with materials to help with ID renewal for individuals who have lost or expired IDs.

UFCW 360 will share job opportunities and information about roles in the cannabis industry and other union jobs across New Jersey. HeadCount will be onsite to register and verify voters for upcoming local New Jersey elections.

SIRV Mobile Barbershop will give free haircuts to the community.

Interested participants can RSVP online through the Blaze Responsibly website.
