  • President Gerald Ford will not be coming to the University of Massachusetts tomorrow after all. The president had considered making a policy speech at the UMass Cage but after his advance team surveyed the place, they made the decision not to come.
  • Police on routine patrol last night thwarted a burglary attempt at Hugo’s, a Pleasant Street night spot. Patrolmen in a cruiser checking the neighborhood saw two persons run from the area around the front door when the cruiser came into view. On checking the door, police found pry marks.

  • The Department of Public Works is hoping for a grant from the state to shore up deteriorating retaining walls on the Mill River. Walls are weakening in two areas, threatening the biggest sanitary sewer trunkline in the city.
  • Valley residents who want a glimpse of the International Space Station will get a good chance tomorrow through Sunday, according to Gerald Ouellette of Northampton, an aerospace industry retiree who still keeps an eye on the sky. Ouellette, who notes that the space station is often visible, said the views are particularly good this week.

  • Whately now boasts a town flag for the first time in its 245-year history. The town decided to redesign its official seal a few months ago to commemorate the consolidation into the new town offices and that symbol can now be found centered in the new town flag.
  • Teri Anderson began work Tuesday as the new executive director of the Franklin Hampshire Employment & Training Consortium and the Franklin Hampshire Career Center. It assists people seeking jobs throughout Franklin and Hampshire counties and the North Quabbin region.
