  • With almost no help from the weatherman, the fourth annual Northampton Winter Festival got off to a good start last weekend, with record crowds for almost all events. The biggest crowd was about 2,000, which jammed the ice at the Oxbow for the annual ice fishing derby, sponsored by the Council of Sportsmen’s Club of Hampshire County.
  • Cynthia G. Simison of Northampton is among 17 students from Syracuse University’s S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, who will cover the New Hampshire presidential primary Feb. 24. The students will work out of the Concord (N.H.) Monitor and report for the New Hampshire State News Service, the Associated Press, and United Press International.

  • Word that Yankee Candle Inc., Deerfield biggest employer, will lay off several hundred employees spread quickly through Deerfield, as shop-workers and customers speculated about the effect it will have locally. But many people said the company’s reduction in its workforce has been a long time coming.
  • For Harry Potter fans, Lilly Library is about to turn into Hogwarts heaven. On Wednesday, the library will hold a Harry Potter costume party, featuring the people, places and things of Hogwarts. Children are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Harry Potter character.

  • Pramod Warriar, Vince George and Vargheese Athimootil on Feb. 2 opened Bombay Royale, an Indian restaurant in One Roundhouse Plaza at 52 Crafts Ave. Bombay Royale offers food from all regions of India and does not use monosodium glutamate.
  • Gazebo, the lingerie store at 14 Center St. that has served women’s intimate needs since 1978, recently received an award. The Best of Intima magazine, a worldwide publication concerning intimate apparel, has named Gazebo winner in the category of best intimate accessories.
