Smith College President Jill Ker Conway is one of the 12 women chosen by Time magazine for its “Women of the Year” award. The magazine, which normally names a “Man of the Year,” this year selected 12 women in various fields.
Despite the efforts of the staff of Arcadia Nature Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, an unusual rough-legged hawk caught in an illegal trap in Hadley may spend the rest of its life confined to a cage. Robie Hubley, Arcadia director, and his wife Judy found the large bird caught in a trap in a field in the Honeypot section of Hadley Christmas Day.

The Williams House, a Williamsburg landmark since it opened as an inn in 1813, was sold last week to a Northampton firm that has changed the name and plans to add a lounge. The Mill River Tavern at the Williams House, as it is now called, was sold by David and Carol Majercik to Sansom, Sands and Divoll Limited Liability Co. of Northampton for $390,000.
Frank R. Llamas, director of a technical education program for 26 Massachusetts schools, was named interim superintendent of Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School Wednesday. Llamas, 60, of Pelham, said he hopes to start the job Jan. 15, one month after the retirement of the school’s former superintendent, Raymond Cooke.

Two local developers are jointly proposing the demolition of two 19th-century homes in Amherst to make way for a new project at the northern end of downtown. Barry Roberts and J. Curtis Shumway are bringing the demolition request — for homes at 236 North Pleasant St. and 12 Hallock St. — before the Historical Commission Tuesday.
After 30 years in Hadley, the KFC at 3 South Maple St. closed on Christmas Eve. Mike Houston, who has owned the restaurant for the past 13 years, made the decision because new labor laws — including a minimum wage increase, part-time sick leave and the Affordable Care Act — cut too far into profits, he said.
