St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Easthampton will have a new rector in February. The Rev. Peter T. Elvin, assistant rector at St. Andrew’s Church in Longmeadow, will replace the Rev. David Harrower, who resigned in November to take a new post in Brampton, Ontario.
Edward A. McColgan, executive director of the state’s Bicentennial Commission and a resident of Northampton, will take part in the entire 18-day “Knox Trail Trek” beginning Jan. 10. The trek will be a reenactment of the Revolutionary march from Fort Ticonderoga in New York to Cambridge, covering 300 miles.

A permanent shelter for the homeless expects to open its doors in mid-February in new headquarters in the former Elks Lodge on Center Street. The 20-cot shelter was scheduled to open in November in the basement of the building but was delayed after the discovery of asbestos in two rooms and an oil tank buried in the building’s rear.
Land on the Mount Tom Range once considered for a hotel casino complex and other developments will be acquired by the state, preserving 200 acres of scenic views and a rich habitat for rattlesnakes and amphibians. The state Department of Environmental Management is buying the Holyoke property from the Mountain Park Corp.

Bernie Sanders, the independent Vermont senator who is pursuing the Democratic nomination for president, will appear at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Fine Arts Center on Saturday. Sanders leads many polls in the first-in-the-nation primary state of New Hampshire but trails rival Hillary Clinton in other states.
Hampshire and Franklin counties are poised to close out 2015 murder-free, according to Massachusetts State Police records. Massachusetts State Police did not investigate any homicides in the two counties all year, according to a statement by the agency Thursday, with hours left to go in the year.
