A local school bus driver is being celebrated for saving a 4-year-old boy who ran into Lake Owasso last Thursday.

Mebal Kaanyi was surprised Tuesday in Maplewood with a $1,000 check in recognition of her quick actions. The money came from production company ShelettaMakesMeLaugh.com, owned by Sheletta Brundidge, a local autism advocate.

Authorities said the boy is non-verbal.

Kaanyi said she saw the boy running alone near Chandler and Owasso Boulevard before he went into the lake. Even though she doesn’t know how to swim, Kaanyi went into the water to help and was able to pull the boy to safety.
