Baton Rouge woman accused of stealing $2,390 from assisted living patient

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A Baton Rouge woman has been arrested after allegedly stealing money from a patient under her care at an assisted living facility.

According to an arrest affidavit, East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies were notified after a victim’s daughter discovered fraudulent checks in her mother’s checkbook made out to Kelsianna Smith, 31. The victim’s mother resides at Holly Court Assisted Living & Memory Care, where Smith is employed.

Investigators determined that eight checks, ranging from $150 to $475, had been made out to Smith and deposited into her bank accounts, totaling about $2,390.90 in losses. The victim’s daughter provided bank statements confirming the deposits, and a search warrant later verified the findings.

Detectives attempted to contact Smith on September 11 to discuss the allegations. She initially agreed to meet but failed to show up, and later hung up when authorities called again.

Smith was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on eight counts of forgery, two counts of bank fraud, exploitation of the infirm, and felony theft, according to EBRSO.
