Shreveport urged to back Salvation Army’s Christmas drive

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The Salvation Army is officially kicking off its annual Christmas campaign, reminding the community that help is needed.

Julie Allen, Salvation Army Spokesperson, said, “It is massively important for us to have a community partnership. It is massively important that our city officials all across northwest Louisiana, specifically Caddo Bossier, come together and bring love to our neighbors in need.”

The nonprofit has registered more than 1,600 angels thus far, and is now preparing nearly 1,000 Thanksgiving meals.

“All of those are impacted if we do not meet our kettle goal. And that’s why it is absolutely vital for our community members to join us in these efforts,” said Allen.

City leaders say this year’s need is especially fitting for those who want to volunteer or donate.

“This is a particularly challenging holiday season for lots of people. Those of us who have benefited from the economy, it’s up to us to dig a little deeper and be a little more generous this holiday season,” said Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux.

Every donation directly funds programs that help provide food, shelter, and toys for kids.

Allen explained, “Eighty-seven cents of every single dollar goes into those programs and services that we do to help our neighbors in need.”
