Donations needed for GBR Food Bank, homeless shelters in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC) is collecting hygiene items and canned goods throughout November to support families and individuals facing hunger and homelessness across the state.

Donations will benefit the Iberia Homeless Shelter in New Iberia and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

LHC said the effort is part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month, a national campaign to highlight the challenges many Louisianans face with housing instability and food insecurity.

Donations can be dropped off at LHC Headquarters, 2415 Quail Drive in Baton Rouge, where gray bins are available on the first floor.

LHC is also recognizing the Iberia Homeless Shelter for its ongoing work serving St. Mary, St. Martin, and Iberia parishes. The shelter provides housing assistance, case management, and access to key resources.

LHC said that in Louisiana, 16.2% of residents face food insecurity, and more than 3,400 people are without stable housing, which is a 10% increase from last year. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 12.2% of Americans experienced some level of food insecurity in 2023.
