Ironton football fans share thoughts on playoff ban

IRONTON, Ohio (WOWK) — The people of Ironton are not happy with the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s (OHSAA) decision to disqualify the Fighting Tigers from the 2025 playoffs, among other punishments.

A statement released by the OHSAA on Saturday confirmed that the football team, on top of paying a $7,500 fine, would be placed under probation through the 2027-28 school year while banning its coaches from coaching in the playoffs next year.

The punishments are the result of discoveries made by the OHSAA during the last several weeks, showing that numerous violations were committed by administrators and the coaching staff at Ironton involving recruiting bylaws over the past seven years.

Later in the day, parents and the surrounding Ironton community spoke up against the ruling.

“It’s my understanding that it was the adults that did something wrong. And, I feel it is extremely heart breaking for this whole community that the young men who did everything right are the ones being punished in this. It’s very, very sad for the entire community, especially the parents and the young men who worked so hard,” Ironton fan Julie Warren said.

Another concern for the football parents is how the ban will impact the players’ college recruitment.
