Heart health day promotes prevention through free screenings

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The fifth annual Heart Health Day took place Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport – St. Mary Medical Center, offering free screenings, physician consultations, and heart-healthy education to the community.

Hosted by LSU Health Shreveport’s Center for Cardiovascular Diseases and Sciences and Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, the event featured EKGs, cholesterol and glucose checks, BMI and blood pressure screenings, CPR demonstrations, cooking lessons, and fitness activities.

“This is an annual event to increase awareness of heart disease and how to prevent heart disease and make our community better and healthier,” said Dr. Kalgi Modi, professor of cardiology at LSU Health Shreveport, in a news release. “About 80 to 90 percent of heart disease is preventable, and how can you prevent it? By knowledge.”

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in Louisiana and across the nation, according to a news release from LSU Health Shreveport.
