Two Cleveland County churches targeted in suspected arson, community helped stop fires

CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Two churches were damaged by intentionally set fires on Friday night, according to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the suspected arsons happened between 9 and 10 p.m. The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, along with local fire departments and fire marshals, responded to fires at Tabernacle Baptist Church and Calvary’s Cross Baptist Church.

Thankfully, alert residents noticed the fires and were able to put them out before major damage was done, the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators believe both fires were intentionally set, and the incidents are still under investigation. Anyone with further information is asked to call the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office at 704-484-4822 or Crime Stoppers at 704-481-8477. You can remain anonymous.
