New ice skating opportunities arrive in Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) – New opportunities to go ice skating and get into the sport of ice hockey are opening up in Topeka at a local events center.

The return of an ice hockey team to the Capital City is bringing with it chances for locals to hit the ice as well. Stormont Vail Events Center announced on Oct. 13 that open skating sessions, along with youth and adult hockey programs, are making a big comeback this year.

“This is a fantastic way to keep the ice active and foster interaction between our players and fans of all ages,” said Don Lewis, president of the Topeka Scarecrows.

Alongside the Scarecrows, the Topeka Adult Hockey League will also be returning to the ice. Its members come from all over the Sunflower State and will give adults of all skill levels a place to compete.

“The Topeka Adult Hockey League is excited and grateful to return to the ice!” said Dave Hodges, TAHL league commissioner and president.

Ty Dragoo, president of the Bison Ice Sports Association, said new youth hockey opportunities will give local kids a chance to try out the sport. The Try Hockey for Free and Learn to Play Hockey initiatives will be launching soon in Topeka to help kids learn the basics of ice hockey.
