Liberty-Eylau starting to find its footing; first “complete” game against Tatum

TEXARKANA, TX (KTAL/KMSS) — After a tough non-district, Liberty-Eylau feels things are coming together following a bye week and a 1-0 start in district.

Everything began to click in Friday’s win over Tatum, especially junior running back Arian Taylor. Taylor, one of the more veteran players on the young Leopard team rushed for almost 200 yards and four touchdowns on a bad knee.

“That was the most complete game he’s played since I’ve been here, from the first carry of the game, he was explosive, he was physical, breaking tackles, he was a leader on the field, just kind of checked every box last game,” head coach Brad Willard said.

Willard was also happy with play on the other side of the ball.

“On the defensive side, it was really exciting to see because we were just way more physical than them. We played really disciplined on defense, but we were the more physical team, which was exciting to see,” Willard said. “Cade McLeod, moving positions a little bit, played nose all night, and just absolutely got after it. Again, kind of like AT [Taylor], Cade played the best game he’s played, over the last two years on Friday. So that was really exciting to see.”

McCleod finished the game with 10 total tackles for the Leopards.

The Leopards are excited to roll with their recent momentum, hosting Gladewater on Friday.

“It’s been a month since we played a game here, so we’re really excited to get home, in front of our community and like a lot of teams in our district, Gladewater is a run oriented team. They want to control the clock, keep the ball away from us, so it’s gonna be another disciplined week,” Willard said.

The Leopards’ game on Friday against Gladewater is set for a 7 pm kick.
