DMV Doers | Volunteer teacher in Fairfax helping students with disabilities thrive in the classroom

FAIRFAX, Va. (DC News Now) — Meghan Butler happily volunteers at the ETC Phoenix School, helping students who have disabilities.

The new school provides an educational opportunity for children with special needs. She calls it an experience of a lifetime.

“The kids are always so much fun,” Butler said. “They keep you on your toes, and they are a joy to be around.”

Butler said her own children needed a strong learning environment that she could not find in public schools, so she found the New ETC Phoenix School, and she has not looked back.

“I think the school is unique and affordable,” she said. “There is a good mix of curriculum, and kids learn more than what is in books.”

Butler said volunteering is part of community growth, and helping kids learn and gain confidence is very rewarding.

“Any person who can give 30 minutes to read to a child or a group of kids is impactful,” she said. “It propels what they are learning in school.”
